In the early 80s the US Marine Corps needed a new maritime helicopter. They considered buying the version of AH-64 Apache, but funding was denied. The Marines had to check a more powerful version of the AH-1J helicopter. The most important requirement was to ensure all-weather conditions. So AH-1W helicopter was designated. It also had an advanced fire control system.
